Seven Tips to Save Electricity in Your Facility

Seven Tips to Save Electricity in Your Facility
Prologis Elizabeth Seaport Building A, Elizabeth, New Jersey

As part of our commitment to sustainability, Prologis developed this list of seven easy steps for facilities to reduce energy consumption and environmental impacts while working toward meeting sustainability goals.

Light Switch Icon

Turn off lights or install motion sensors.

Turn off lighting when it’s not in use, especially in conference rooms, bathrooms, closets and at your desk. Infrequently used areas are ideal candidates for motion sensor-activated lighting, including conference rooms, copier nooks and bathrooms.

Skylight Icon

Use natural daylight.

Natural daylight provides better illumination than artificial lighting. Depending on your space, photocells can automate taking advantage of the sun.

Power Icon

Power down and unplug equipment.

Most devices plugged into a wall socket draw energy even when they are not turned on. ENERGY STAR estimates that turning off equipment when not in use—such as computers and printers—can reduce a building’s total energy consumption by up to 5%. Unplugging these electronics completely will reduce phantom energy consumption.

Energy Star Icon

Use ENERGY STAR-certified products.

The ENERGY STAR logo signifies products that use less energy than their non-certified counterparts. Be sure items purchased by your IT department are ENERGY STAR certified.

Blinds Icon

Use blinds to regulate temperature.

Shutting or angling blinds in the summer helps block heat from the sun, while opening shades in the winter takes advantage of the natural warmth.

LED Icon

Install energy-efficient LED lighting.

Upgrading your exiting lighting to energy-efficient LED will not only save you money on your electricity bill, you’ll also save on maintenance costs.

EV Icon

Designate parking spots for hybrid or electric vehicles.

Employees who drive a hybrid, flex-fuel or electric vehicle (or who volunteer to carpool) should have access to reserved parking spaces close to the building entrance. Also consider installing electric vehicle chargers to support your employees and visitors who drive vehicles that require charging.
